Familiar Person – My Flatmate, Jayson
A Stranger – Medieval Joker, Lincoln Christmas Market
My ‘Selfie’
Above are my three final images taken in response to the ‘Portraiture brief’.
With regards to the ‘familiar’ portrait, I have this photo shoot easiest and fun to perform due the comfortable relationship between me and the model. The image was taken as the model was laughing at some irreverent to me or the photo shoot, making it a completely candid and natural pose. I used wide depth of field as I wanted the model to fill the majority of the frame using a close-up shot therefore wanted everything to be in focus. During post-production I wanted edit the image into monochrome, therefore applied the black and white and adjusted the brightness where appropriate.
I found the ‘Stranger’ portrait most difficult to conduct as I felt uncomfortable photographing people I didn’t know. I visited Lincoln town centre during the annual Christmas, giving me lots of opportunities to capture many strangers. There were many characters dressed up including the medieval joker whom I found amusing and interesting. As shown in the image he interacts with the public, giving away a very extravagant and confident persona. I feel I have used an interesting composition, capturing the main subject from a side profile. By doing this it enabled to also photograph the reactions of surrounding strangers which successfully adds more context and narrative to the image.
I chose to capture my ‘Selfie’ using the reflection of a mirror. By doing this is made it easy for me to see how I was capturing myself and whilst monitoring the exposure and focus. I like the image as I feel it is very light-hearted, reflected from the bright crisp colour, my facial expression and fun background.
